Motherhood is a privileged role of life which exceeds the rewards and
joy of anything a person may ever experience. The natural grace and
influence of a mother is excellent and rewarding beyond all virtues.
Both the New Testament and the Old Testament of the Bible show clearly,
the influence of Godly mothers on the lives of several people. The fact
that God would use a human mother to bring His Son into the world has
bestowed upon motherhood its greatest honour.
If we consider Mary the mother of Jesus, we see that she was very
special, highly favoured of God and was submissive to God and His
perfect will to be done in her life (Luke 1:38). She believed the word
of God and had complete faith on whom she believed and trusted (Luke
1:46-55). She was a wonderful, virtuous, obedient woman who loved and
worshipped God (Luke 1:46) and should be respected and appreciated.
Mary followed as well as obeyed Jesus, the same as all other believers
did (John 2:5).
Her presence at the foot of the Calvary cross (John 19:25-27)
highlights the mother's love in her. And not only that, she patiently
waited for the promise of Jesus, the baptism by the Holy Spirit, along
with the other believers (Acts 1:14).
In all cases, she is revered in Christian tradition who represents
goodness, innocence and profound commitment to the ways of God.
If we refer to the Old Testament, there we find a woman named Hannah
(literally means 'Grace'), the mother of Samuel (1 Samuel 1:2). Due to
the agony in her heart, she wept bitterly and prayed to God (1 Samuel
1:10) and believed that the sovereign Lord heard all her petitions. She
made a vow to the Lord (1 Samuel 1:11) that if she would give birth to
a son, she would dedicate the child to God. Subsequently, God
remembered her and gave her a male child, who was name 'Samuel'. She
fulfilled her promise to God, that is, dedicated the child to God. She
was a woman who poured out her heart to God and not to any man,
believing that God who sees the invisible can do the impossible for her
in her life. She was down-to-earth in her dealings. Accordingly, God
rewarded her for the precious tears that she shed in His divine
presence.
Motherly virtues are often extolled: compassion for children (Isaiah
49:15), comfort of children (Isaiah 66:13) and sorrow for children
(Jeremiah 31:15, Matthew 2:18).
Surely, a godly mother is like a beautiful flower that is
ever-blossoming. She offers all the hope of a rainbow that follows a
spring shower and does not fail to put a ray of sunshine into the
troubled heart of a child, thus mending all its woes and keeping it
warm.
