Cornelius & Peter (Part-II) |

Peter went downstairs. He
listened to what the three men had to say about how an Angel of the Lord
appeared to Cornelius asking him to send for Peter.
So, the next day, Peter started out with them and some of the
believers from Joppa went along. |

Cornelius had called together his relatives and close friends in his house. On Peter's arrival, Cornelius fell at his feet with great respect. But Peter lifted him up saying, "Stand up; I am only a man myself." Talking with him, Peter looked round and saw that there was a big gathering of men, women and children. He said to them, "You are well aware that it is against our law for a Jew to visit you (as it is against the Jewish culture and Cornelius was a Greek). Yet, God has shown me that He loves everybody without any difference. For that reason, I'm here. Now, why did you send for me?" Then Cornelius said, "I'm so happy that you have come to my house. I had a vision that we should send for you. Now, all of us have gathered in God's presence just to listen to everything that the Lord has commanded you to tell us." He told Peter all that the angel had spoken to him during the vision. Peter nodded to everything and said, "Surely, God treats everyone the same. For Him, there is no difference. He accepts everyone who believes in Him. I see that now." While Peter was still speaking these words, the Holy Spirit came on all who heard the message. The Jewish believers Peter had brought along with himself were surprised - as they had never seen the Holy Spirit being poured out on the gentiles or people other than Jews. They now heard them speaking in tongues and praising God. It was during this period, that the believers were first called - "CHRISTIANS". It meant 'called and separated by God'. So, Jesus is common for one and all. It is upto us to choose Him and if we choose to believe Him, He will just accept us as we are, i.e., unconditionally, and gives us a brand new life. Q1)
Who accompanied Peter from Joppa?
Q2) What name was given to the believers there? |
