Saul to Paul

When Stephen died, one religious leader named Saul was there to give approval to his death. The death of Stephen marked the beginning of terrible suffering for the followers of Jesus. But, the people chose to show great boldness during these tough times. Many had to give up their precious lives as well as others were forced to leave their homes and were totally scattered for the great decision they had taken to stand for Jesus alone.

But, even as the people got scattered and ran for their lives from bad people like Saul, they still continued to spread the goodnews of Christ in every way possible. Thus, instead of becoming weaker in their faith in Christ, they became more and more stronger which their enemies never expected.

Saul had developed strong hatred towards anyone who was a follower of Jesus. He used to destroy the Church, drag off men and women and put them in prison. Saul went to the Chief Priest to get details of Jesus' followers living inside and outside the country as he wanted to get all the men and women who professed about Christ arrested, bring them back as prisoners to Jerusalem and then, have them mercilessly killed.

This bad intention of Saul was soon spread everywhere. All the believers in the area prayed for each other. They knew how cruel and evil Saul was. He went to Damascus first carrying important letters with him. The letters gave him the authority to arrest any of the followers of Jesus. There were even armed guards traveling with him.

But then, a very amazing thing happened! Suddenly, as he was on the road, he saw a light from heaven, brighter than the sun, blazing around him and his companions. All fell down on the ground.

Saul heard a voice say to him - "Saul, Saul, why do you hurt me so much?"
Then Saul asked, "Who are you Lord?"
Then he heard, "I am Jesus of Nazareth. When you are hurting, arresting and killing my followers, you are doing it to me. You are killing me over and over again. Now get up and go into the city! I have appeared to appoint you as My servant and as a witness of what you have seen of Me."

Then Saul, as he opened his eyes, he found that he had become blind. He was led by his friends to the place where Jesus asked him to go. He later on, came to be known by the name 'Paul'.
