Overcome Evil with GoodSpeaker: Dr. D.G.S. Dhinakaran Gist: In this world, it is difficult to win over or overcome something called enmity. The tendency of a human being is to commit mistakes but it calls for a divine virtue to forgive. In this world, it is difficult to win over or overcome 'enmity'.
Several years ago, there lived a very famous Russian writer named Leo Tolstoy. People enjoyed to read his writings. 'War and Peace' is a well-known story written by him. In the story, he describes an incident: In a certain remote village, two children were playing. As they were enjoying their play, suddenly there arose a quarrel between them. The parents of the two children saw this and came running to the spot. They took sides with their children and began to fight among themselves. After a short while, the friends and relatives of the two families came and added fuel to the fight. There was a great turmoil! At last, nobody knew why they began the fight. As this fight was becoming furious, an old man of the village gathered all of them together in order to settle the quarrel. When they came together, he showed them the two children who had been unknowingly the cause of the great fight. The two children, least bothered of what was happening around, were delighted in the company of each other, playing joyfully. The villagers who saw this incident were filled with shame and bowed their heads.
Doesn't this incident remind us the words of our Lord Jesus Christ, "Assuredly, I say to you, unless you are converted and become as little children, you will by no means enter the kingdom of heaven" (Matthew 18:3).
There is an old adage, "To err is human, but to forgive is divine." According to this saying, it is human tendency to commit mistakes, but it calls for a divine virtue to forgive. Today, we too can imbibe this divine virtue in us.
St.Paul the apostle says, "Be angry, and do not sin; do not let the sun go down on your wrath." (Ephesians 4:26)
Let us earnestly ask our Lord Jesus Christ to give us this wonderful virtue today and help us live in peace with all our neighbours. May the love of God fill your heart and rule your mind!
Prayer:
Loving Lord Jesus,
I praise You for having overcome this world through Your love and sacrifice. I beg You to kindly help me overcome all enmity in my heart. Help me to do good even to those who harm or persecute me. O Prince of Peace, give me Your grace to be a peace maker in this world. Adorn me with the quality of forgiveness which is divine. I thank You for heeding my humble voice and granting me peace in my heart.
